BRICK & BLOCK RESTORATION & PRESERVATION

Have you noticed deterioration or cracking in the mortar joints between your brick or block? Are the faces of your bricks crumbling or falling off? These are signs that your masonry work is in need of attention.

The sooner you take care of these problems the better! When masonry is compromised with these types of problems it is more susceptible to allowing water to enter the structure and cause further damage. Call us today for a free no obligation inspection and let us help you come up with an effective and affordable solution.

When caught early these problems may be able to be fixed with minor tuck pointing or individual brick / block replacement. And, if the problem is too far along for more minor repairs, we can handle any scope of demo and rebuilding that may be required to remedy the issue. Either way you will want someone knowledgeable in the trade to do your job. For example, did you know that when working with softer style bricks such as reclaimed commons, you want to go with a type-N mortar? If a less experienced mason uses a harder type-S or type-M your mortar joints will actually be stronger than the bricks they’re holding together. When this is the case, if there is any movement in your wall, your brickwork will develop cracks throughout. On the other hand, if you’re in need of structural repair on something like load bearing cinder block, you will want to go with type-S for it’s higher compressive strength.

STONE VENEER

Choosing the right cultured or natural stone veneer for your unique application and budget can be tricky. Give us a call and let us help you! Our seasoned project managers have the knowledge and experience to help you find what you’re looking for within your allotted price range. Keep in mind also that installing these materials is a specialized task. If you want your new veneer to last you’re going to want the right pros at your home or business to do the job. For example, some mason’s will use a standard type-N mortar mix when hanging stone, when in reality they should be using something with a bond strength of 180psi or better for a vertical application. Details like this can be the difference between lasting beauty and catastrophic failure.

TUCKPOINTING

Have you noticed cracked or otherwise deteriorating mortar joints between the brick, block, or stone at your home or business? If so, give us a call. There is a common misconception that tuck point repair is something that anyone can do. Cracks and voids should never just be filled in as is, because it won’t last. To do the job properly the surface mortar on the entire area in question needs to be removed to allow for new mortar to be installed. We do this without damaging the surrounding brick with high speed diamond blade angle grinders.

After the area is prepped and cleaned we use a variety of different mortar blends to properly match the style, age, and character of your brickwork. When it comes to mortar matching it’s all in the details. Everything right down to the sand that is used in the mix affects the final look and durability of your product. For example, when repairing historic brickwork sometimes it’s better to use plaster sand in your mix rather than standard mason sand. Plaster sand has larger aggregate that better matches the less refined sands that were used once upon a time. Let us put our years of experience to work for you.

BRICK REPLACEMENT

When dealing with cracked or crumbling bricks, the first thing to do is assess the scope of the damage. If the problem is localized and minimal, we may be able to perform brick replacement. This is where the affected bricks are individually cut and chipped out while leaving the surrounding brickwork intact. We replace the removed bricks with bricks that are the best industry match, guaranteed.

How can we guarantee that your new brick will be the best possible match? Our project managers have years of experience, combined with an arsenal of supply yards and manufacturers. We maintain relationships with Glen Gery, The Belden Brick Co, Hanson, General Shale Brick, and Bowerston Brick Company, and others. We also have preferred vendor status with the very best brick yards, such as Sabiston Building Supply, that specialize in finding and stocking reclaimed common brick as well as other rare and hard to find used face brick. It is our standard practice to do whatever needs to be done to provide the best possible masonry restoration.

Never settle, give us a call today and let southeast Michigan’s premier restoration team go to work for you.

CHIMNEY REPAIR

External forces such as the weather, freeze/thaw effect, and water erosion can wreak havoc on your masonry chimney. Internal forces like condensation from your hot water heater and furnace exhaust can also do a number on your brickwork over time. If you think you might have a problem, or just want to to look into preventative maintenance, give us a call. About 90% of the time the need for major chimney reconstruction can be avoided with simple maintenance.

Most chimney problems start when cracks form on the concrete chimney crown (cap). This is the layer of concrete that caps and seals the chimney top and keeps water out. When the crown is compromised, water gets in and starts to erode the brick and mortar from the inside out. If this is caught early we can usually remedy the problem with a new crown and minor repairs and save you a lot of money down the road.

When it comes to major chimney reconstruction, you will definitely want the right pro’s for the job. Almost 500 people die in the U.S. from carbon monoxide poisoning annually. Your chimney was designed to vent smoke and deadly gasses from your home and it is imperative that you have someone knowledgeable in the trade and current codes do this work for you. Not only does proper chimney restoration and reconstruction keep your home safe, it also keeps it looking beautiful and preserves your property value.

RUBBERIZED CAULK

When it comes to preserving concrete flatwork such as sidewalks, driveways, patios, or parking lots, waterproofing is the name of the game. When water makes its way underneath your concrete it can create wash out in the substrate over time. When this happens, you can be left with large voids under the structure. When a vehicle is driven over one of these voids, cracks are created. Even the natural freeze/thaw cycles can be enough to cause your concrete slabs to heave in the winter causing permanent movement and weakening. Most of this water makes its way underneath your concrete through unprotected expansion joints or existing cracks in your flat work.

Polyurethane rubberized caulking such as Sikaflex 1c SL is a great option for sealing such areas. This product is specially formulated to bond extremely well to masonry surfaces and is rubberized to allow for considerably more movement than other caulk materials after curing. This means that it stands up to the expansion and contraction that your concrete goes through with temperature change. Rubberized sealants can be a great, affordable, easy way to preserve your concrete and avoid costly replacement.
